Visual Artist Residency: Larry Lebby

Heathwood Hall art classes welcomed renowned visual artist and Heathwood parent Larry Lebby to our campus September 13 – 17. As part of his school-wide arts residency, Mr. Lebby worked with students in Lower School (3rd grade students with teacher Kelley Neeley), Intermediate/Middle School (8th grade students with teacher Clare Scurry), and Upper School (selected art classes with teacher Hartley Barber). Mr. Lebby is an extraordinarily successful visual artist whose work has been showcased throughout the country and abroad, even hanging in the White House and Smithsonian Museums. He also has been the subject of numerous newspaper and magazine articles.

Mr. Lebby will return for another week during the spring semester, but Lower School art teacher Kelley Neeley may be talking about this fall visit for weeks to come. "Mr. Lebby brought in some of his paintings to share with the students and allowed them to ask questions about his work. He focused his time on how to draw anatomically correct features of the face when creating portraits and demonstrated how to begin drawing the eyes while the children gathered around him in awe. Students then were given the opportunity to practice drawing an eye as Mr. Lebby walked around offering his guidance." What a blessing to have such a talented and committed individual as part of our school community!
